Many people today are managing their own business while also working full-time for someone else. Perhaps you do "gig" work in the evenings and on weekends to make a few extra bucks. It's important to keep records of all of this for tax purposes as well as for tracking our own skill development and growth over time.

In The Facts of Life Book Course and Community you'll get access to resume templates, learn about differences between a curriculum vitae and a resume, and - if it's important to you - learn some simple strategies for keeping your information up to date online via LinkedIn and/or your own web site/online portfolio.

Gathering work & career Records

To get started with any of these options, the first step is to make sure you have all of your work and career records as organized as possible. Here are some typical resources people like to have available as a part of their Facts of Life Book.

    • A list of all employers that includes the employer's name as well as:

      • Start and end date of employment

      • Job title(s) - include dates of significant promotions/title changes

      • Specific job responsibilities, duties, and skills - a copy of job descriptions is helpful for this

      • Name and contact information for the supervisor and HR

    • List of honors and awards you received from the employer

    • Examples of exceptional work completed with that employer. Be sure that you have authorization to share work created while employed by someone else.

    • If you are a business owner you should also include:

      • Business incorporation documents

      • State and Federal Business Registration Information (e.g. Employer Identification Number (EIN), DUNS number, etc.)

Resources

In the Facts of Life Course and Community, you'll gain access to carefully curated and evaluated resources including web sites, tools, books, and more to help you gain more knowledge and information in areas that might be particularly important to you. Here on the website, I share just a few of my favorites for each major topic.

    • We all have to create our own motivation in whatever way works for us. Keeping a brag file might help you keep your motivation high in our work and career.

    • Update your resume each year - not just to make sure the information is current, but also to keep the format modern and fresh.
